A brief bio
All of the arts interested me...
Dance, drama, painting, writing, and playing the alto sax. It was difficult to settle on just one...
But fate made the call.
Studying fine art at the university...
Was a dream I finally got to fulfill. In addition to painting; I added French, criminology, negotiating, mime, drama and a plethora of courses. In essence, I was a professional student. My painting focused on the female body, having studied dance for a decade. I loved observing the form, the movements. It was magnificent.
At twenty-two, I renewed my vision and planned on auditioning for the Houston Jazz Ballet, but did a silly thing. I took up skydiving and shattered my ankle. I tell people:
"I fell into painting!"
Going commercial...
Isn't always best for every artist. For me, it paid the bills and I got to paint; but it took me away from my burgeoning style.
Alfred Stieglitz allegedly told his famous painter wife - Georgia O'Keefe:
"To be a fine artist, and paint commercially, is like being a virgin in the morning, and a prostitute in the afternoon."
This has been my experience. Once I got into the zone, a mural, or some signage work would come in. I had to accept the work, of course. When the job was completed, I found it difficult to hold onto that vision and to pick up where I left off.
But I never stopped.
Then the rains came...
Between 1982 and 1990, my younger brother was tragically killed; Dad died; Mom died; my father-in-law died: and finally, my husband was killed. Every time I got back to some semblance of work, some close member would 'kick the bucket': finito benito; arrivederci; sayonara; and kaput!
Add, rearing two lovely sons, alone, was challenging: and they tolerated my crying and somber moods. My elder son got into drugs, at that time, and has maintained, ever since. My younger son is in law enforcement with a medical degree. I'm proud of them both for each of their character traits: and love them infinitely. Things really do have a way of working out. I just take one day at a time and do the upon opening my eyes...you know it well:
I have an attitude of gratitude.
God Bless America and God Bless the Thin Blue Line!
